What is Amara’s UK legal corpus? It is a body of UK legislation and case law built from official sources and split into sections and paragraphs that can be cited one by one, each with its official reference, its date, the version in force on a given date and its amendment history. The aim is not to pile up PDFs but to hold the law in force and correct references. It starts with England and Wales, is under construction and is coming soon.
Three layers: legislation, case law and assimilated law
- Legislation: Acts of Parliament and statutory instruments, in their revised versions and with the version in force on a given date.
- Case law: judgments of the UK Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court and the tribunals published by The National Archives and, in a separate collection, the European Court of Human Rights.
- Assimilated law: the EU-derived law kept on the UK statute book after Brexit, called retained EU law until the end of 2023 and assimilated law from 1 January 2024.
The UK has three legal jurisdictions: England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Amara starts with England and Wales and keeps each jurisdiction separate, so that Scottish or Northern Irish law is never mixed into an English matter.
The official sources
| Source | What we use |
|---|---|
| legislation.gov.uk (The National Archives) | Acts and statutory instruments, revised versions and point-in-time versions |
| Find Case Law (The National Archives) | Judgments of the UK Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court and tribunals, from 2001 onwards |
| The UK Supreme Court | Judgments and the issues decided in each case |
| Assimilated law | EU-derived legislation kept in UK law, as amended in the UK |
| HUDOC | Case law of the European Court of Human Rights, relevant under the Human Rights Act 1998 |
Point-in-time versions are the basis for knowing which law applied to a contract signed in 2022 and which applies in 2026. Amara works with the version in force on the date of the facts, not only with the current text.
First phase: the core areas of practice
We start with the areas where solicitors and law firms in England and Wales handle the most matters: civil procedure, contract and consumer law, employment, landlord and tenant, family, company and insolvency, data protection, immigration and criminal law. Each Act enters in its revised version and with its history of amendments; we never assume that the original text includes later reforms.
We will publish the list of Acts and instruments in each area, and the figures for the corpus, only once they have been checked.
Assimilated law: telling the old EU law from the new UK law
| Situation | Rule in Amara |
|---|---|
| EU-derived law kept in the UK | Retrieve the UK version as amended in the UK, not the current EU text |
| Law revoked or replaced in the UK | Show it only for facts that happened while it was in force |
| New EU law after Brexit | Keep it apart: it does not apply in Great Britain unless UK law says so |
| Data protection | Apply the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, not the EU GDPR |
A common error is to quote the current EU text as if it still applied in the UK. Amara always identifies the jurisdiction and the date before answering.
How we build and check the corpus
- Official sources only: legislation.gov.uk, Find Case Law, the UK Supreme Court and HUDOC.
- Normalisation: official references, dates, versions in force and the jurisdiction each provision applies to.
- Citation checks: text and semantic search and an automatic check that every section cited exists and is in force on the relevant date. When there is no reliable source, Amara says so.
- Review with UK lawyers before we present any part of it as available.
Questions about the UK corpus
When will it be available?
Coming soon. Founding firms get early access to the first parts and will hear the date before anyone else.
Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Not in the first phase. We start with England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own law and courts and will be added as separate jurisdictions.
Does Amara mix UK law with Spanish or EU law?
No. Each jurisdiction has its own corpus and Amara identifies the country of each matter before searching. Current EU law and UK assimilated law are kept apart.
Can I use Amara in the UK before the corpus is ready?
Yes. The copilot, document review, drafting in English, matters, the CRM and Amara Work already work today.
